Half Moon Door Mat

A rectangle at a door always overhangs something: the frame, a step, the edge of a tiled entry. The half-circle profile of this mat sits flush against the door frame instead, following the arc of a swinging door rather than fighting it, which is why it works in tight entryways where a standard mat has to be pushed out of the way every time someone comes in.

The working part is a textured pile that scrapes mud and grit off the soles of shoes and drops it down into the surface, below where the next person will walk, rather than leaving it sitting on top to be tracked onward. It also holds water from wet shoes instead of letting it run off and pool on the floor around the mat, which is exactly where an unwitting slip happens.

Rubber backing grips tile so the mat holds still when somebody wipes their feet against it with real force. Two sizes come in dark grey or beige brown, suited to a front door, patio, mudroom or back entry. Care is a weekly shake and a hose down when it needs more. Two things to note: it is not machine washable, and the rubber backing needs a smooth, dry floor to grip properly.
